In October last year, Mozilla CEO John Lilly told GigaOM in no uncertain terms that Mozilla was planning to release an iPhone app for one of its products but wouldn’t name which one. GigaOM speculated it would be for Mozilla Weave, currently a Mozilla Labs project, and late last week this was confirmed by Mozilla who released a video demo of the prototype version of the app.

Mozilla Weave is basically a more complex and advanced version of Google’s bookmark sync service, in that it works with Mozilla’s web browser Firefox to synchronise not only all of your bookmarks, but also your browsing history and the tabs and windows you have recently closed.

In the demo video (embedded below) for the prototype iPhone app, Mozilla demonstrate a simplistic interface that allows you to browse your currently open tabs and bookmarks, and provides a search tool that lets you search all of your open tabs, bookmarks and history.

“This iPhone application makes use of the Weave service APIs to bring your bookmarks, browsing history and tabs right to your phone,” a Mozilla employee said in the video.

“We hope this brings us one step closer in trying to bring our users a rich more personalised experience of the web, no matter where they go, in an open and transparent manner.”

Whilst a spokesperson from Mozilla today wouldn’t confirm that the app was the one mentioned by Lilly in October last year, it seems likely that this is it.

Unfortunately according to the FAQ posted by the Weave team, they still haven’t made a final decision on whether or not they will submit the application to the iTunes App Store – although given how complete the application looks in the demo video it looks like the app is almost a finished product. They also promise that if they do decide to distribute it, it will always remain free – rather unsurprising really. For those without an iPhone, the Weave team are looking to add full support for the service in future versions of Firefox for Windows Mobile, Android and Nokia’s Maemo platform instead of making a separate applications.

Meanwhile on a different note, in an effort to douse suggestions of Firefox coming to the iPhone platform, Mozilla says in the Weave FAQ that there are no current plans to make an iPhone version of Firefox mobile – despite Opera’s recent announcement that it plans to attempt to submit Opera Mini to the iTunes App Store.
