The trike, which allows Google to film off-road locations for their Street View service on Google Maps, today launched for the first time in Australia at the iconic Taronga Zoo.

“We’re really excited to have the Trike in Australia for the first time, because it will let us collect imagery of some of Australia’s most spectacular natural and man-made places that are off the beaten track – or, at least, set back from the public roads along which our Street View cars normally travel,” Andrew Foster, a Google product manager said.

Weighing in at 110kg, the trike is specially fitted with a GPS system and the Street View cameras, and launched late last year in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Google Australia is urging Aussies to suggest iconic places you think should be captured by the trike, with entries closing on Monday February 8, 2010 after which point entries will be shortlisted and then voted on by the public. The winners will be announced on Thursday the 25th of February.
