Apparently slipping under the radar, Microsoft Australia’s “Ten Grand is Buried Here” competition has drawn to a close.

The competition, which aimed to promote Internet Explorer 8, found a winner on the 27th August according to a series of tweets on the official competition Twitter profile:

We’re excited to announce the winner of Microsoft Australia’s TenGrandisBuriedHere competition, congratulations to Gavin Ballard of Brunswick East, Victoria.

Ballard apparently won by entering the password “Courval” on the website fastsafeprivatebetter.com which currently lets you enter the password before taking you to a page with all the competition answers.

And guess what. Even Microsoft appear to be jumping on the Internet meme bandwagon which Google has sparked interest in over the last day or so, with clue 15, L19R1L6R5,  requiring the same translation as a recent Google tweet.

The competition was under scrutiny right from the word go, when users complained that they were being forced to use IE8 to enter the competition when one of the rules basically implied you should “Get lost” if you used any browser but IE8. Microsoft later clarified the situation, but the damage was done.

Congratulations Gavin!
