Google's free email offering Gmail has this afternoon gone down, displaying a Temporary Error to users attempting to sign into the service.

An update on the Google Apps status page says that a small subset of users were and in some cases still are affected by the issue. It’s unclear at this stage what has caused the disruption, but we’ve sent an email to Google asking for a response about what the problem was.

Users attempting to sign in are seeing an Temporary Error (500) page with numeric error code 93.

More soon.

Update: TechCrunch has now picked up on the story, but Gmail still isn’t working. We’re waiting to hear back from Google about the situation but the Google Support page says that a fix is expected to be rolled out to all affected users soon.

Update: More users are reporting being able to log back into their Gmail accounts, but we still can’t access ours.

Update: IMAP and POP access appear to be back up and running again, but no luck still with the Gmail web interface. Google also updated their status page, saying:

Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users within the next 1.2 hours. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.

Update: And we’re back – Gmail finally appears to be working for the vast majority of users again. We’ve placed an email with Google asking about the issue, and will update when we hear back. They’ve also posted an update on the Gmail blog:

We know many of you are having trouble accessing Gmail right now — we are too, and we definitely feel your pain. We don’t usually post about minor issues here (the Apps status dashboard and the Gmail Help Center are usually where this kind of information goes). Because this is impacting so many of you, we wanted to let you know we’re currently looking into the issue and hope to have more info to share here shortly. If you have IMAP or POP set up already, you should be able to access your mail that way in the meantime. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and will get Gmail back up and running as soon as possible.
